PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s sudden U-turn on the revocation of the emergency ordinances (EOs), with him acknowledging that it was not properly done, saw parliamentarians react with astonishment and anger.

Former prime minister Najib Razak said the government’s change of tack showed that it had lied to the country while Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Azalina Othman Said jeered: “A day late and a dollar short!!!”

In a statement today, Muhyiddin said that with the Emergency having ended on Aug 1, the cancellation of the EOs by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong no longer arose, but said they would still be laid before Parliament in September to be debated in line with the King’s decree on the matter.

He said the motion would be discussed in a Cabinet meeting tomorrow, which he hoped would “resolve the polemic surrounding the revocation of the EOs harmoniously and constitutionally”.

Najib, in response, said the government had lied to the country when it said last week that the ordinances had already been revoked.

“Don’t put this proposal to the back of the schedule. Let it be the first motion of the next parliamentary session.”

PKR’s Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said the prime minister’s statement failed to answer the “troubling question” of clarifying law minister Takiyuddin Hassan’s statement that six of the emergency ordinances had been revoked on July 21.

He said this was compounded by the statement from Istana Negara on July 29 that stated Takiyuddin had misled the House.

“I don’t believe this move will resolve the government’s self-made crisis. If anything, it will prolong matters,” Fahmi said.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer also said the U-turn indicated the prime minister and the Cabinet lied to Parliament when Takiyuddin stated that the ordinances had been revoked on July 21.

“It shows that the prime minister and the Cabinet committed treason and treachery when they went against the advice of the King who wanted the EOs tabled, debated and voted upon in the July Parliament sitting.

“The prime minister and the Cabinet must resign immediately if they had any ounce of dignity left.”

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah called it a “total travesty of parliamentary democracy,” and said the course correction should have been done yesterday when the Dewan Rakyat was supposed to sit.

“You don’t revoke ordinances and not inform the Agong, only to then discuss them later.

“The prime minister has lost his understanding of what the Constitution is all about and he should resign, together with the whole Cabinet. Malaysia deserves better and should not be lied to or led by the nose.”

Former international trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz chimed in, saying the statement from the prime minister sounded like one coming from a “lame duck Cabinet”, and questioned why a Cabinet meeting on the matter was not held earlier.

She said that given all the opportunities the government has had to discuss the revocation before the end of the Emergency, it called into question whether the leaders had their priorities in order.

Azalina said the government had missed their opportunity as they were supposed to explain Takiyuddin’s statement yesterday in Parliament before it was suspended.

In a tweet, the Umno Pengerang MP said: “A day late and a dollar short!!!”

Netizens get in on the act

Social media users were quick to react to the news on Facebook.

Anita Rajagopal said the EOs should not be tabled in September as the current Parliament session has not been completed yet.

“September? Absolutely not! You didn’t even complete this session yet. Plus, you need to table a motion of confidence first before other matters can be addressed,” she said.

Henry Yap said the debate should be done immediately due to the critical situation of the Covid-19 pandemic.
