PETALING JAYA: The country’s longest-serving prime minister has described Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Cabinet line-up as “disappointing”.

“I’m disappointed because there is not much change from (former prime minister) Muhyiddin Yassin’s time,” said Dr Mahathir Mohamad in an audio clip shared with the press.

“The same people have been appointed (to the Cabinet) even though they did not perform under Muhyiddin.”

Mahathir said some of those appointed, like federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim, were good at talking, but whether they could perform was a different matter.

He said the new government spoke a lot on politics, but little was said about its plans to address the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mahathir’s words echoed those of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim who had called the new Cabinet a “recycled line-up with ministers who had failed to perform in the last 1.5 years being reappointed”.

“It is disappointing. We had hoped for changes but it did not happen,” he said in a Facebook live feed.

Earlier this morning, Ismail announced his Cabinet line-up, retaining many of those who served in Muhyiddin’s Cabinet.
