KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced an allocation of more than RM18 million for disaster relief efforts in Sabah.

Ismail, who is on a one-day official visit to the state today, said the allocation, totalling RM18,241,250 will be channelled through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).

He said the money is meant, among others, to purchase 2,000 units of food kits worth RM160,000 and 2,500 units of tents worth RM961,250, while RM20,000 will go to the state disaster operations management committee.

A total of RM1.1 million will be channelled to the 22 district-level disaster operations management committees, and RM16 million will be for Covid-19 operations management.

“I hope a portion of this allocation can be utilised to ease the burden of victims in the landslide in Penampang yesterday. I sympathise with the victim’s families,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, Ismail was briefed by chief minister Hajiji Noor and state Cabinet members at Menara Kinabalu, the state administrative building here.

Following yesterday’s bad weather, he said he acknowledged the state’s need for more funds, which he would consider, especially to the Penampang district which bore the brunt of the damage.

An eight-month-old baby and a five-year-old girl were among three people killed in the landslide triggered by hours of rain at a workers’ quarters in Penampang, near here.

They were among six people in the quarters meant for workers involved in the construction of a condominium.

On Sabah’s development needs, Ismail said Putrajaya would continue to give attention to the state, citing several projects that would be prioritised such as schools, infrastructure and amenities.

The prime minister was scheduled to launch the Malaysia Day celebrations at the Sabah International Convention Centre here later today. It will be a low-key celebration with limited attendance because of the pandemic.

Ismail also announced that the central disaster management committee (JPBP) had agreed to increase the Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) assistance from RM500 to RM1,000.

This is meant for every head of household affected by the monsoon season or any other disaster identified by the committee.

This initiative is expected to relieve the burden of more than 39,100 households, involving some RM39.5 million from the National Disaster Relief Fund.
