Cops probe tweet quoting Kit Siang’s Sri Lanka remark
PETALING JAYA: The police have begun an investigation for incitement over a tweet about public unrest in Sri Lanka which appeared to be quoting a blog posting by DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.
Bukit Aman CID director Abd Jalil Hassan said a screenshot of the tweet has been circulating since Thursday.
Police did not state the origin of the tweet nor did the police statement mention Lim.
The police statement said it was investigating the tweet, which reads: “Will the houses of the Prime Minister and Ministers of Malaysia be set on fire by angry protestors as happened in Sri Lanka last week?”
A similar sentence was used as the headline of a blog post published by Lim yesterday. He later denied supporting violence by comparing Malaysia to Sri Lanka, which has suffered political chaos due to its worst-ever economic crisis.
He had come under criticism from former prime minister Najib Razak who accused Lim of inciting the public. However, Lim said he was only warning that Malaysia should learn from the ongoing experience in neighboring countries.
He said he had also changed the headline after being advised by his political secretary. The headline now reads “Can Malaysia learn from the lessons of Sri Lanka?”
He criticised “desperate politicians and opportunists” of taking the opportunity to twist and distort the original meaning and purpose of his statement as being seditious.
