KOTA KINABALU: Pakatan Harapan should not consider working with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) in the 15th General Election (GE15), says Upko vice-president Datuk Ewon Benedick.

He said the coalition would be better off with other electoral partners than the former prime minister’s party.

Benedick, who is Kadamaian assemblyman, said his stance on the matter stemmed from Pakatan’s history with the Pejuang chairman.

“Pejuang has the right to (come to) Sabah but if Upko were given the choice whether or not to work with it (I would say) enough is enough after past experience with Dr Mahathir.

“This is my personal view as Upko

vice-president and an assemblyman (but) it is about time that he (Dr Mahathir) should just take a rest,” he told a press conference here on Friday (June 3).

Benedick, who is expected to contest the president’s post in the Upko polls later this year, added that he would convey his thoughts on rejecting any cooperation with Pejuang to the Sabah Pakatan leadership if it ever considered such cooperation.

He was responding to a question about Dr Mahathir’s remark that Pejuang will not work under the “big tent” concept with Pakatan if it is led by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Pejuang chairman was quoted in an Utusan Malaysia report as saying that Anwar and Muhyiddin were leaders with personal agendas and “tidak lurus” (dishonest).

Pejuang president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir had previously said his party was open to working with parties from both sides of the political divide in Sabah for GE15.

Benedick also said the prospect of Sabah Pakatan working with Parti Warisan was also looking unlikely after the latter’s constant criticism of the coalition for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government.

He claimed the attacks would come back to bite Warisan.

“For me, the possibility of working together is becoming more difficult.

I’m worried that (Warisan) would eventually need help from (Sabah Pakatan components) Upko, PKR and DAP.

“(I believe) the criticisms will make it tougher for Warisan to defend some of the parliamentary seats it is holding,” he said.

Sabah DAP secretary Phoong Jin Zhe said it was not that Pakatan was reluctant to work with Warisan, but the other way round.

“Warisan is the one pushing us away. (Because of this) we need to strengthen our own pact,” said the Luyang assemblyman.

Phoong’s colleague, Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin, felt it was ironic for Warisan to keep criticising Pakatan over the MOU and for receiving funding from the government.

“But (Warisan’s) own people are asking for funding from me. Don’t just criticise and later request for assistance, although we will still help,” he said.
