BUKIT KAYU HITAM: Human trafficking syndicates have adopted a new modus operandi to smuggle illegal immigrants into the country.

The General Operations Force (GOF) uncovered this new tactic after foiling an attempt by six Indian nationals who tried to enter the country from Thailand by impersonating as lorry attendants near the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex, here, late Tuesday.

GOF Ulu Kinta 1st Battalion commanding officer Superintendent Shamsul Baharin Aman said the six suspects, including a woman, were detained at a roadblock about one kilometre from the border checkpoint.

Shamsul said the illegal immigrants, aged between 30 and 59, failed to understand Bahasa Malaysia when questioned by the GOF personnel manning the roadblock.

“They were travelling in four separate lorries transporting vegetables and grocery items,

“They were detained after failing to produce valid travel documents,” he told reporters at the Malaysian Border Patrol Agencies Complex here today.

He added that investigations revealed that the human trafficking syndicate had paid the lorry drivers RM500 to smuggle each of the illegal immigrants from Dannok in southern Thailand to Changlun here.

Shamsul said all the four local lorry drivers, aged between 28 and 41, had been handed over to the Kubang Pasu police for further action.

Following their arrest, Shamsul said authorities have picked up a 40-year-old man from Kubang Pasu, who was suspected to have paid the lorry drivers to bring the illegal immigrants into this country.

“We are not ruling out the possibility that the man had pulled various other tricks to smuggle illegal immigrants into the country.

“We believe the six Indian nationals had been travelling for months before they got here and there are many other illegal immigrants awaiting to be smuggled into this country following the reopening of all economic sectors,” he said.

Shamsul said the case was being investigated under Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
