KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to provide bigger allocation to the Education Ministry in order to improve the Food Supplementary Programme (FSP).

With continuous complaints from Malaysian Canteen Operators Association in the last two years, Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the right decision was to increase the allocation.

He said the government need not have to “rob Peter to pay Paul”, but be more prudent spending of its available resources.

“We see unnecessary and wasteful ways almost on a daily basis. If needed, let’s cut down on non-essential expenditure like having large entourage following a VIP or minister on his or her visits.

“We can have savings if we cut down on overseas travel of dubious value. These suggestions are made in the best interest of our children, the allocation has to be raised. There is no other way,” he said in a statement today.

The current FSP rate is RM2.50 in the peninsula and RM3 in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

The Malaysian Canteen Operators Association had urged the Education Ministry to raise the allocation for the programme.

Its secretary, Siti Normah Md Desa, had said the current rates were no longer relevant due to the increasing cost of raw materials.

Lee questioned the delay by the government in acting, despite being asked by the canteen operators.

He stressed that the government should not compromise when it comes to the health and well-being of the children.

“Our children must never go hungry. Some of them come to school without having had breakfast.

“They need nutritious food for their brain power,” he added.
