DAP’s G Saminathan (left) and P Gunasekaran were nabbed in 2019 over their alleged links to a now defunct group.

Muhyiddin (PN-Pagoh) said this when questioned by RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) who asked why he had ordered the authorities to arrest G Saminathan and P Gunasekaran three years ago over their alleged links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Rayer had asked Muhyiddin if he was confident that there was enough evidence at the time to implicate the duo in terrorist activities.

Muhyiddin replied that the arrests were made in accordance with procedure and that the report was thoroughly investigated by police.

“As the minister responsible, I have to trust and (put my) confidence in the police since I am not the investigator. I can’t say the inspector-general of police (IGP) had lied,” he told the lower house, referring to then IGP, Abdul Hamid Bador.

Muhyiddin said this when debating the extension of the sub-section of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) that allows for a 28-day detention period.

He also claimed that the then Pakatan Harapan government did not make a decision on abolishing Sosma.

This prompted Khalid Samad (PH-Shah Alam) to interject and accuse Muhyiddin of “selective amnesia”.

“We debated about it (Sosma) in the Cabinet to the point where we brought Ayob Khan (Mydin Pitchay) and requested that (Sosma) be reviewed,” he said referring to the former Special Branch counter-terrorism principal assistant director.

“Don’t lie in this Dewan. You want to tell a story, tell the full story,” the former federal territories minister said. He was backed by former human resources minister M Kula Segaran.

Muhyiddin then replied: “I remembered that (we wanted to) review (it). But there was no final decision made by the government at that time (regarding Sosma).”

Khalid then asked why a review was needed if the government had agreed to abolish the law.

Rayer continued to grill Muhyiddin and asked the latter about the evidence which proved that Gunasekaran and Saminathan were involved in terror activities.

“Till today, there is no evidence. Why did you betray us? You were our home minister at that time.

“Why did you not stand up for us? We were in the same coalition. You campaigned with us.”
