PETALING JAYA: Changing the Perikatan Nasional (PN) logo for the next general election will not work as voters are smarter than what politicians think of them, say two political analysts.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said PN is underestimating the intelligence and maturity of the voters by resorting to this, especially with the election around the corner.

“It will not make much of a difference as our voters are mature and intelligent enough to know that changing the logo is merely giving its façade a facelift while everything inside is nearly the same.

“Having a new logo will not change anything except for a small feel-good factor. If the leadership, strategy and aura of the parties in the coalition are still the same, it won’t make any big difference,” he told FMT.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS chief Abdul Hadi Awang recently announced that they have agreed on a new PN logo for GE15.

Hadi said the change would not alter PAS’ agenda of ummah unity and its cooperation with Umno under Muafakat Nasional.

Azmi said PN leaders were resorting to this because of the coalition’s poor performance in recent state elections and thus needed a “scapegoat”, for which they conveniently chose the logo.

“I expect Bersatu will be sensitive to the sentiments of PAS leaders and members as the moon symbol and the green colour are the soul of the Islamic party. I am sure you will find the moon somewhere in the logo with a green background.

“Whatever they do will not make much of a difference as the substance of the parties in the coalition will be the same,” he said.

Awang Azman Pawi, a socio-political analyst from Universiti Malaya, said while a logo change would not have much of an effect on PN, it may result in PAS losing some of its seats as its hardcore supporters would not be able to accept this sudden change, especially with GE15 expected to be called soon.

“Only the logo will be new while the old faces will still be standing as candidates in GE15. It is going to be very difficult for PAS as the party has been synonymous with the moon and green-coloured flag over the last 50 years,” he said.

He said the setbacks would be felt mostly in the east coast states and the rural and semi-urban areas in other states where PAS had good support.
