KUANTAN: The Pahang government has implemented initiatives to strengthen the Tasik Chini biosphere reserve site in line with recommendations by the International Advisory Committee on Biosphere Reserves.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan in a statement said the measures include updating the zonation to maintain the three functions of the biosphere reserve site and gazetting the Chini permanent forest reserve.

“Other initiatives are carrying out integrated enforcement, ceasing all mining and setting up the Pahang State Parks Corporation and Pahang Biodiversity Council to empower the governance of the Tasik Chini biosphere reserve site.

“Since 2016, the ministry has provided allocations of more than RM1.5 million for research at Tasik Chini, including studies on water quality.

“This year, the ministry, through the Forestry Department, is implementing a rehabilitation and reforestation programme at the site with an allocation of RM800,000.”

He said the ministry always supported the Pahang government’s commitment and efforts to protect the lake.

He said last year, the Pahang government prepared a periodic review report as part of the obligations set by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

“The ministry, as the national contact point for the (Unesco) Man and Biosphere (MAB) programme, submitted the report on the Tasik Chini biosphere reserve site to the MAB Secretariat in 2021.

“The International Advisory Committee on Biosphere Reserves assessed the report and gave us until Sept 30 this year to make improvements.

“The ministry has always emphasised the importance of ensuring the site meets the objectives of the MAB programme.

“We are committed to protecting Tasik Chini’s status as a biosphere reserve site.”

Last week, it was reported that Tasik Chini’s biosphere reserve status was under threat as the lake allegedly failed to fulfil the criteria to be part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Last year, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail reportedly said RM20 million was needed to rehabilitate 600ha of land in Tasik Chini that were affected by mining.

He said the state government had imposed a moratorium on new licences for mining and there was no more mining near the lake.
