PETALING JAYA: Former Selangor menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has died in hospital at the age of 75.

His death, announced on his official Facebook page moments ago, came a little over a week after it was reported that he was seeking treatment at a local hospital as he was unwell.

He was reported to have been taken to hospital with a lung infection in May but his condition stabilised.

Khalid served as Selangor’s menteri besar from 2008 until September 2014, a month after he was sacked from PKR after repeatedly refusing to vacate the post.

He joined PKR in 2006 and became treasurer-general. In the 2008 general election, he was elected assemblyman for Ijok and MP for Bandar Tun Razak and became menteri besar when Pakatan Rakyat gained control of Selangor.

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said Khalid had been a great mentor and a good friend to the family. “You will always be remembered,” she wrote on Facebook.
