KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there is a need to devise a “new formula” that transcends race, religion and culture after the 15th General Election (GE15) for the sake of political stability.

He added that politics was dynamic in nature and any new formula had to come only after the election.

“If we were to do it now, all parties would say that they were strong, even if the reality is otherwise.

“So Umno and BN want to demonstrate this first during the election,” he said at the Puteri Barisan Nasional Convention at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur here today

“For the sake of the country and the people, we must be politically colour blind in forming partnerships.”

He stressed the importance of BN ‘s states and wings holding their conventions in preparation for GE15.

“There is no need to follow tradition. In the past, Parliament would be dissolved first before any preparation is made and meetings are convened.

“In this day and age, preparations have to be made much earlier.”

At a press conference later, he said the accusation that Umno was guilty of delaying the formalisation of Muafakat Nasional (MN) between Pas and it was a mere hypothesis.

“We offered an olive branch. They not only bit the hand, but almost broke it. We are now building our strength on our own.”

He was commenting on a statement by Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who claimed that the antics of some Umno leaders had led to the delay in formalising the MN partnership between the two parties.

Abdul Hadi, at the launch of the Terengganu Perikatan Nasional (PN) on Saturday, claimed that the problems included attempts by some Umno leaders to create a new entity (apart from PN), which had led to the downfall of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration last year.

At the same event, Muhyiddin, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, also claimed that it was Umno that had rejected Bersatu and Pas’ admission into MN.
